BICHO FELIZ | Animal Welfare and Shelter Center

EN
The evolution of the relationship between human beings and their pets shows a higher sympathy between them, motivated by passion and gratified by unconditional love - a pure act of self-giving. Dogs and cats become like members of families and at the same time that they are being loved, welcomed and protected, there are others that are being rejected and suffering animal abuse, which leads to the drastic growth of the animal population on the streets (PASTORI E MATOS, 2017). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are around 30 million abandoned animals in Brazil, and in desire for respect for all forms of life, helpless animals count on the help of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for animal protection.

Taking into account the increase of abandonments in the city of Garibaldi, and in relation to all the support and love of volunteers in protecting against acts of cruelty and against any form of animal suffering, this project is a place for the new headquarters of the Bicho Feliz volunteer association. A headquarters that is capable of treating abandoned animals and protecting them in comfortable environments, ensuring that the center is rotating, and promoting responsible adoption campaigns. The shelter promotes public health and prevents traffic accidents. Furthermore, the lack of adequate infrastructure to serve the population of homeless animals is a social problem that needs to be reversed.

The NGO Bicho Feliz has a very important role for the community, but they do not have a fixed location, and the overcrowding in the kennel, which is rented, makes the problem even more serious. Today the biggest adversity is the lack of an appropriate place for the cattery, with a clinic specialized in caring for them. Today, the NGO shelters around 100 animals that have been victims of abuse and abandonment. The project aims to provide support, emergency care and recovery spaces. In addition, it will be used as a temporary home for dogs and cats until they are adopted. To help with the financial situation, the space will include a center for volunteer service needs, as well as a bazaar, café and space for diversified events.

The architectural project aims to reduce the number of animals on the streets, preventing the spread of diseases and raising awareness among the population about abuse and mistreatment. Consequently, abandoned animals will have the opportunity to have a temporary home to receive love and care, in addition to encouraging adoption through interaction between animals and humans.

CONCEPT
Designing a shelter center for dogs and cats is more than following health standards, it is a reflection about the feeling of comfort and security it provides. A warm, healthy and inspiring space, being sustainable and functional. An environment that looks at the animal's vulnerability with affection and that is worthy as a temporary home until it finds its final home.

The shelter's premise is to be a temporary and rotating home, avoiding fences that resemble a prison for the animals. Man and animals are directly connected with nature, and to seek welfare, the project intends to camouflage itself in the wooded area in which it is located, seeking as much interaction with the environment as possible, transmitting a sense of security and establishing emotional connection.

The aim of the project is developed through the implementation of large and comfortable spaces, with internal courtyards, kennels and spacious catteries for their stays. Also, areas of activity involve the public in interacting with animals, in addition to becoming a source of income for voluntary service. In addition to this, there is a veterinary care and administration block that will provide adequate support to the shelter.
